How to Stop Windows 11 from Automatically Connecting to Open Wi-Fi Networks

Windows 11 is designed to keep you connected to the internet as much as possible. By default, the operating system is configured to automatically connect to suggested open Wi-Fi hotspots it detects nearby. While this feature was created for convenience, it poses a significant security risk and can often result in your PC connecting to slow, unstable, or malicious public networks without your permission.

The Security Risk of Open Networks

Open Wi-Fi networks (such as those in cafes, airports, or hotels) do not require a password to join. Because the connection is unencrypted, any data you send over that network can potentially be intercepted by someone nearby using packet-sniffing software. Automatically connecting to these networks exposes your computer to unnecessary vulnerabilities.

How to Disable Automatic Connections to Open Hotspots

To protect your privacy and ensure your computer only connects to trusted networks, you should disable this feature in the Windows 11 Settings application.

1. Click the Start button on your taskbar and open the Settings app (the gear icon). Alternatively, press Windows Key + I.
2. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Network & internet.
3. Click on Wi-Fi.
4. Click on Manage known networks.
5. Here, you will see a list of every Wi-Fi network your PC has previously connected to. Find any open networks (like a cafe hotspot) and click the Forget button next to them.

How to Stop Your PC from Reconnecting to Specific Networks

If there is a specific network you use occasionally but do not want your computer to join automatically (such as a weak public network that overrides your stronger phone hotspot), you can change its connection properties.

1. Ensure you are currently connected to the network you want to manage.
2. Open Settings and navigate to Network & internet > Wi-Fi.
3. Click on the network properties (usually the name of the network you are currently connected to).
4. Find the toggle switch labelled Connect automatically when in range and turn it Off.

Your Windows 11 PC will now only connect to this specific network when you manually select it from the Wi-Fi menu.
