The Accidental Selection Annoyance
When reading long articles or reviewing documents on a Mac, many users have a habit of dragging their cursor along the text as they read. Unfortunately, macOS sometimes interprets this movement—especially if you are using a Magic Trackpad or a Magic Mouse—as an attempt to select text. The result is that entire paragraphs become accidentally highlighted in bright blue, which is visually distracting and makes the text harder to read. This is often caused by a hyper-sensitive trackpad setting or an accessibility feature that misinterprets a resting finger as a click-and-drag command.
How to Disable “Three Finger Drag”
The most common culprit for accidental text highlighting on a Mac is an accessibility feature called “Three Finger Drag.” This feature allows you to select text by swiping three fingers across the trackpad without actually pressing down to click. Because it requires no physical click, it is very easy to trigger accidentally.
1. Click the Apple Logo in the top-left corner of the screen and select System Settings…
2. Scroll down the left sidebar and click on Accessibility.
3. In the main pane, click on Pointer Control.
4. Look for the “Mouse & Trackpad” section and click the Trackpad Options… button.
5. Look for the setting labelled Use trackpad for dragging.
6. Click the dropdown menu next to it. If it is set to “Three Finger Drag,” change it to Without Drag Lock or completely disable the feature by turning the toggle switch off.
7. Click OK to save the changes.
How to Adjust Trackpad Click Firmness
If you do not use the Three Finger Drag feature, your accidental highlighting is likely caused by the trackpad being too sensitive to physical pressure. You might be accidentally triggering a “click” just by resting your thumb on the pad while moving your index finger.
1. Go back to the main System Settings menu.
2. In the left sidebar, click on Trackpad.
3. Under the “Point & Click” tab, look for the slider labelled Click.
4. By default, it is usually set to “Medium.” Move the slider to the right toward Firm.
This adjustment requires you to press down significantly harder on the trackpad to register a click, virtually eliminating the chance of accidentally highlighting text while simply moving the cursor around the screen.
