The Fullscreen Disruption
One of the most infuriating experiences for a PC gamer is being in the middle of an intense, fullscreen gaming session, only for Windows 11 to suddenly minimize the game to the taskbar. You are violently thrown back to the desktop, often accompanied by a notification chime or an update popup. By the time you manage to click the game icon to restore the window, your character is dead or you’ve lost the match. This automatic minimizing is rarely caused by a crash; rather, it is usually triggered by background applications stealing “focus” from the active fullscreen window to demand your attention.
How to Enable Focus Assist (Do Not Disturb)
The primary culprit for minimizing games is the Windows notification system. An incoming email, calendar alert, or system update notification will often rip focus away from your game. You can stop this by configuring Do Not Disturb.
1. Click the Start button and open Settings (or press Windows Key + I).
2. Go to System > Notifications.
3. Look for the Turn on do not disturb automatically section and click it to expand the options.
4. Ensure the checkbox next to When playing a game is Checked.
5. Ensure the checkbox next to When using an app in full-screen mode is also Checked.
Now, whenever Windows detects that a game is running in fullscreen mode, it will completely suppress all notifications, ensuring they cannot steal focus and minimize your application.
How to Identify Rogue Background Apps
If you have Do Not Disturb enabled but your games are still randomly minimizing, a third-party background application is likely the culprit.
Common offenders include:
- Antivirus Scanners: Programs like McAfee or Norton displaying popup alerts or starting scheduled scans. Enable “Silent Mode” or “Game Mode” in your specific antivirus software settings.
- Software Updaters: Apps like Adobe Creative Cloud, Java, or driver utilities checking for updates.
- Overlays: Discord, GeForce Experience, or Xbox Game Bar overlays can sometimes glitch and steal focus. Try disabling in-game overlays one by one to isolate the issue.
To find the culprit, right-click the Taskbar and open Task Manager. Go to the Startup apps tab and disable any unnecessary background programs. The fewer apps running in the system tray, the less likely one of them is to violently minimize your game.
