The Google Chrome New Tab page can be customized with various backgrounds. One of the customization options allows Chrome to automatically pull a new image every day from a specific curated collection (like “Landscapes,” “Art,” or “Cityscapes”). While a fresh daily image sounds delightful in theory, in practice, it can be highly distracting. A particularly vibrant or visually noisy background can make it difficult to read the thumbnails of your frequently visited sites or the Google search bar. If you prefer a consistent, minimalist environment to start your browsing sessions, the constantly shifting artwork is an unnecessary annoyance.
How to Disable Daily Background Refresh
To lock your New Tab page to a single image or revert it to the standard, clean interface, you need to adjust the customization settings directly on the New Tab page itself.
1. Open Google Chrome and open a New Tab (press Ctrl+T or Command+T).
2. Look in the extreme bottom-right corner of the window for a button labelled Customize Chrome (it may also just look like a small pencil icon).
3. A side panel will open on the right. Ensure you are on the Appearance tab.
4. Under the “Background” section, click on the button that says Change theme.
5. If your background is changing daily, you likely have one of the image collections selected. Click into the active collection (e.g., “Landscapes”).
6. Look at the top right of the collection grid. You will see a toggle switch labelled Refresh daily. Click the toggle switch to turn it Off.
Your background will now remain locked to the currently displayed image.
How to Revert to the Default Blank Background
If you want to remove images entirely and return to the classic, fast-loading blank page, follow these steps:
Open the Customize Chrome side panel on a New Tab page again. In the “Appearance” tab under “Background,” simply click the option that says Default Chrome (or “Classic Chrome”). The background image will instantly disappear, replaced by the standard white (or dark grey, depending on your system theme) background, ensuring zero visual clutter when you open a new tab.
