How to Stop Your Mac from Automatically Changing the Display Resolution

When you connect an external monitor to your MacBook, macOS attempts to be helpful by automatically selecting the “Default for display” resolution. In theory, this provides the sharpest image. However, macOS often prioritizes text scaling over raw screen real estate, especially when connecting to 4K or ultra-wide monitors. It might automatically scale the UI elements so large that your massive new monitor effectively displays the same amount of information as your tiny laptop screen. Even worse, if you disconnect and reconnect the monitor, macOS sometimes forgets your previous manual overrides and reverts back to its preferred, magnified automatic scaling.

How to Force a Fixed Resolution in System Settings

You can stop macOS from guessing the best scaling option by taking manual control of the resolution settings and unlocking the advanced list of supported formats.

1. Connect your external monitor to your Mac and ensure it is turned on.

2. Click the Apple logo () in the top-left corner of the screen.

3. Select System Settings (or System Preferences).

4. In the left-hand navigation sidebar, click on Displays.

5. At the top of the Displays pane, make sure you have selected your external monitor (not the Built-in Display).

6. By default, you will see a series of thumbnails representing text sizes, ranging from “Larger Text” to “More Space.” This is the automatic scaling interface.

7. To see the raw resolution numbers, click the Advanced… button at the bottom (on older macOS versions, you might need to hold down the Option key while clicking the word “Scaled”).

8. Toggle on the switch that says Show resolutions as list.

9. A drop-down menu or list will appear showing the exact pixel dimensions (e.g., 3840 x 2160, 2560 x 1440).

10. Click the specific resolution you want. Toggle the “Show all resolutions” switch if your desired format is hidden.

By forcing the display into a specific numerical resolution from this hidden list, you bypass the macOS dynamic scaling engine. Your monitor will now stubbornly hold that exact pixel density every time you plug it in.
