The Disappearing App Launcher
The macOS Dock is the central hub for launching applications, managing running programs, and accessing the Trash. Some users prefer a minimalist desktop and configure the Dock to automatically slide off the bottom of the screen when not in use, reappearing only when they move their mouse cursor to the very edge. However, if this feature is turned on accidentally, or if you share a Mac with someone who prefers this setting, the disappearing Dock can be incredibly frustrating. Waiting for the animation to play every time you need to switch apps breaks your focus, and a hidden Dock makes it impossible to see notification badges (like unread messages) at a glance.
How to Disable Dock Auto-Hide from the Apple Menu
You can quickly force the Dock to remain permanently visible on your screen using the primary system settings menu.
1. Click the Apple logo () in the top-left corner of your Mac’s screen.
2. Select System Settings (or System Preferences if you are using an older version of macOS).
3. In the left-hand sidebar, scroll down and click on Desktop & Dock.
4. Look at the top section of the main window, specifically the options grouped under “Dock.”
5. Locate the toggle switch labelled Automatically hide and show the Dock.
6. Click the switch to turn it Off.
The Dock will immediately pop up from the bottom (or side) of your screen and stay there permanently, ensuring your app icons and notification badges are always visible.
How to Disable Dock Auto-Hide Using Keyboard Shortcuts
If you find yourself constantly switching between a hidden Dock (for full-screen focus work) and a visible Dock (for multitasking), navigating through System Settings is too slow. Apple provides a built-in keyboard shortcut to toggle this behavior instantly.
Simply press the following keys simultaneously:
Option + Command + D
Pressing this shortcut once will hide the Dock. Pressing it again will instantly pin the Dock back to the screen permanently. This shortcut works globally from within almost any application, saving you time and frustration.
