The Aggressive Security Timeout
Windows 11 includes several security and power-saving features designed to protect your data when you step away from your desk. If your computer detects that you are inactive, it will automatically turn off the display and lock the screen, requiring you to enter your PIN, password, or use Windows Hello (facial/fingerprint recognition) to get back in. While this is crucial in a busy corporate office, it is incredibly annoying if you are working from home alone, reading a long document on the screen, or watching a progress bar complete. Being forced to unlock your PC every five minutes simply because you haven’t moved the mouse is a massive disruption to your workflow.
How to Disable the Screen Lock Timeout
The automatic locking behavior is tied directly to your power and sleep settings. To stop the computer from locking, you must tell it to stop going to sleep.
1. Click the Start button and select the gear icon to open Settings.
2. In the left-hand navigation pane, click on System.
3. Click on Power & battery (or just Power on some desktop PCs) in the main pane.
4. Expand the section labelled Screen and sleep.
5. You will see several drop-down menus depending on your hardware (e.g., “On battery power, turn off my screen after,” “When plugged in, put my device to sleep after”).
6. Change the “Sleep” settings to Never.
If you don’t want the screen to go black either, change the “Turn off my screen” settings to Never as well.
How to Disable Dynamic Lock (Bluetooth Proximity)
If your screen is locking almost immediately when you stand up, you likely have “Dynamic Lock” enabled. This feature uses the Bluetooth connection to your smartphone to gauge your physical distance. When your phone moves out of range, the PC locks itself instantly.
1. Open Settings.
2. In the left-hand navigation pane, click on Accounts.
3. Click on Sign-in options.
4. Scroll down to the “Additional settings” section and look for Dynamic lock.
5. Click to expand the section, and uncheck the box that says “Allow Windows to automatically lock your device when you’re away.”
With Sleep set to Never and Dynamic Lock disabled, your Windows 11 desktop will remain exactly as you left it, completely unlocked, until you manually press Windows Key + L to lock it yourself.
