Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) are essential for secure browsing and accessing corporate networks. However, if you have configured a VPN directly within Windows 11, you might find that the operating system attempts to automatically connect to it every time you join a new Wi-Fi network, or immediately upon booting up the computer. While this ensures you are always protected, it can be highly frustrating if you only need the VPN for specific tasks, as it can slow down your general internet speed and break access to local network devices like wireless printers.
How to Disable Automatic VPN Connections
Windows 11 manages its VPN connection rules through the core Network settings panel.
1. Open the Start menu and click the gear icon to launch Settings.
2. In the left-hand navigation pane, click on Network & internet.
3. In the main window, click on VPN.
4. You will see a list of all your configured VPN connections. Click on the specific VPN profile that is automatically connecting to expand its details.
5. Look for a setting labelled Connect automatically or an “Advanced options” button that leads to connection triggers.
6. Ensure that the “Connect automatically” toggle is switched to the Off position.
How to Disable VPN Auto-Launch in Third-Party Apps
If you are using a dedicated application provided by your VPN service (such as NordVPN, ExpressVPN, or Cisco AnyConnect) rather than the built-in Windows 11 tool, the operating system settings will not control it. You must disable the behavior inside the app itself.
1. Open your specific VPN application from the system tray or Start menu.
2. Click the gear icon to open the app’s Settings or Preferences.
3. Look for a section usually named General, Startup, or Auto-connect.
4. Uncheck any options that say “Launch on system startup” or “Auto-connect when app launches.”
By disabling these application-level triggers, your VPN will remain completely dormant in the background until you explicitly open the interface and click the connect button.
