The Hidden Windows
When Windows 11 first launched, Microsoft made a controversial design decision: it forced the taskbar to always combine multiple windows from the same application into a single, generic icon. If you had four separate Microsoft Excel spreadsheets open, you couldn’t see their titles on the taskbar. Instead, you only saw one Excel icon, and you had to hover your mouse over it and wait for a thumbnail preview to pop up just to find the correct document. This automatic grouping fundamentally destroyed the multitasking workflow for power users who rely on seeing window labels at a glance.
How to Disable Taskbar Grouping (Never Combine)
After immense pressure from the community, Microsoft finally brought back the classic “Never Combine” feature in a later Windows 11 update, allowing you to stop the automatic grouping and display the full text labels for every open window.
1. Right-click on any empty space on your Windows 11 taskbar.
2. Select Taskbar settings from the small pop-up menu.
3. The Settings app will open. Scroll down and click to expand the Taskbar behaviors section.
4. Look for the dropdown menu labelled Combine taskbar buttons and hide labels.
5. By default, this is set to “Always.” Click the dropdown and change it to Never.
Your taskbar will instantly expand, breaking the applications out of their groups and displaying the classic, readable text labels next to each icon.
Handling Multiple Monitors
If you use a dual-monitor setup, you might notice that changing the setting above only fixes your primary monitor. Windows 11 manages secondary taskbars independently.
1. Stay in the Taskbar behaviors menu.
2. Look slightly further down for the dropdown menu labelled Combine taskbar buttons and hide labels on other taskbars.
3. Change this dropdown from “Always” to Never as well.
Now, regardless of which screen your application is on, you will always be able to read its title without hovering.
