The Auto-Open Annoyance
If you have ever downloaded a PDF, an image, or a ZIP file in Google Chrome and noticed that the file instantly opens itself the moment the download finishes, you have accidentally triggered an auto-open rule. While this can be convenient for specific file types you use constantly, it can quickly become infuriating if Chrome starts automatically launching every single document you download, interrupting your workflow and cluttering your screen with unwanted application windows.
How to Clear Your Auto-Open Preferences
Google Chrome does not have a master switch to turn this feature on or off. Instead, it remembers the specific file types you have told it to open. To stop the behaviour, you must clear those saved preferences in the browser’s settings.
1. Open Google Chrome.
2. Click the three vertical dots in the top-right corner of the window.
3. Select Settings from the drop-down menu.
4. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Downloads.
5. Look in the main pane. If you have any active auto-open rules, you will see a section labelled “Auto-open.”
6. Click the button labelled Clear next to the text that says “Open certain file types automatically after downloading.”
How to Prevent It from Happening Again
Once you clear those preferences, Chrome will go back to simply dropping files into your Downloads folder without launching them. To ensure this does not happen again, you need to be careful when interacting with the Chrome downloads bar or the downloads menu. This issue usually starts because a user clicks the small arrow next to a downloading file and accidentally ticks the box that says “Always open files of this type.” By being mindful of that specific checkbox, you can keep your downloads silent and unobtrusive.
