The Security Risk of Stored Credit Cards
Like most modern browsers, Microsoft Edge attempts to make online shopping as frictionless as possible by offering to save your credit card information. When you enter a card number to make a purchase, Edge will typically prompt you to save it for future use. For users who share a family computer, frequently lend their laptop to colleagues, or simply prefer maximum financial security, having your credit card details accessible to anyone who opens the browser is a massive privacy risk.
How to Disable the Payment Autofill Feature
You can completely disable Microsoft Edge’s ability to save, store, and autofill payment methods, ensuring you must manually type your card details for every purchase.
1. Open the Microsoft Edge browser.
2. Click the three horizontal dots located in the top-right corner.
3. Select Settings from the drop-down menu.
4. Ensure you are on the Profiles tab in the left-hand sidebar.
5. In the main pane, click on Payment info.
6. Locate the toggle switch at the top labelled Save and fill payment info.
7. Click the toggle switch to turn it Off.
Removing Previously Saved Cards
Turning off the autofill feature will stop Edge from asking to save new cards, but it will not remove any cards you may have accidentally saved in the past. To ensure your financial data is completely scrubbed from the browser, look directly below the toggle switch on the “Payment info” page. If you see any credit cards listed there, click the three horizontal dots next to each card and select Delete. Your browser is now completely disconnected from your financial data.
