How to Stop Windows 11 from Automatically Emptying the Recycle Bin

The Storage Sense Automation

Windows 11 features a built-in utility called “Storage Sense.” When your hard drive starts running low on space, Storage Sense can automatically kick in and delete temporary files to keep your system running smoothly. However, one of the files it aggressively targets is your Recycle Bin. By default, Storage Sense is often configured to permanently delete any file that has been sitting in your Recycle Bin for more than 30 days. If you use the Recycle Bin as a safety net and occasionally need to recover files you deleted months ago, this automation can lead to permanent data loss.

How to Stop Storage Sense from Touching the Recycle Bin

You can configure Storage Sense to continue cleaning up useless temporary system files while explicitly commanding it to leave your deleted files alone.

1. Click the Start button and open the Settings app.

2. Ensure System is selected in the left-hand sidebar.

3. Click on Storage in the right-hand pane.

4. Under the “Storage management” section, click on Storage Sense. (Make sure to click the text itself, not just the toggle switch next to it).

5. Scroll down to the section titled Configure cleanup schedules.

6. Look for the dropdown menu labelled Delete files in my recycle bin if they have been there for over:

7. Click the dropdown menu and change the value to Never.

Managing Your Space Manually

With this setting changed, files will remain in your Recycle Bin forever until you right-click the bin icon on your desktop and manually select “Empty Recycle Bin.” While this protects you from accidental data loss, you must now remember to empty the bin yourself when your hard drive actually becomes full, as those deleted gigabytes of data are still physically occupying space on your disk.
