How to Use the macOS Grapher Utility to Plot Mathematical Equations in 2D and 3D

When students or engineers need to visualize complex mathematical equations, they typically search for third-party plotting software or web-based calculators. However, macOS includes a powerful, heavily underutilized built-in application called “Grapher.” Hidden deep within the Utilities folder, Grapher is capable of rendering intricate 2D graphs and highly detailed 3D models directly from standard mathematical notation.

Why Use macOS Grapher?

Grapher is significantly more capable than the standard macOS Calculator app. It supports parametric curves, polar coordinates, differential equations, and complex vector fields. Because it runs natively on your Mac’s hardware, it can smoothly render and rotate 3D mathematical surfaces in real time without lag, making it an exceptional educational tool for calculus and physics.

Step 1: Open the Grapher Application

Grapher is not located in your main Applications folder, so it requires a specific search to find.

  1. Press Command + Space to open Spotlight Search.
  2. Type Grapher and press Enter.
  3. Alternatively, open Finder, navigate to Applications, open the Utilities folder, and double-click the Grapher icon.

Step 2: Choose a Graph Type

The interface consists of a blank coordinate system and an equation bar at the top.

  1. Click inside the equation bar at the top of the window.
  2. Type your mathematical function. For a simple 2D parabola, type y = x^2.
  3. To access advanced mathematical symbols (like Pi, square roots, or integrals), click the small Equation Palette button located to the right of the equation bar.
  4. Press Enter. Grapher will instantly render the curve on the coordinate plane.

Step 4: Manipulate 3D Graphs

If you selected a 3D graph, you can interact with the rendered surface.

  1. Enter a 3D equation, such as z = sin(x) * cos(y).
  2. Once the surface is rendered, click and drag your mouse across the graph area to rotate the 3D model in real time.
  3. Scroll up or down with your mouse wheel (or trackpad) to zoom in and out.
