How to Use the Accessibility Zoom Feature in macOS to Magnify Your Screen

Whether you have visual impairments or you simply need to take a closer look at a high-resolution image, macOS includes a powerful built-in screen magnification tool. The Accessibility Zoom feature allows you to magnify the entire screen, a specific window, or a picture-in-picture area using your keyboard or mouse, making it much more versatile than standard browser zooming.

Why Use Accessibility Zoom?

While you can use Command + Plus to zoom in on web pages or text documents, this only enlarges the text within that specific application. Accessibility Zoom magnifies the entire operating system interface, including menu bars, system dialogue boxes, and applications that do not normally support text scaling. It is an essential tool for presentations, detailed graphic design work, and general accessibility.

Step 1: Enable Zoom in System Settings

To use the feature, you must first activate it within the macOS System Settings.

1. Click the Apple menu () in the top-left corner of your screen.
2. Select System Settings (or System Preferences on older versions of macOS).
3. Scroll down the left sidebar and click on Accessibility.
4. In the Vision section on the right, click on Zoom.
5. Toggle the switch for Use keyboard shortcuts to zoom to the ON position.
6. (Optional) You can also toggle Use scroll gesture with modifier keys to zoom if you prefer to zoom in using your mouse wheel or trackpad while holding a specific key like Control.

Step 2: Choose Your Zoom Style

macOS offers three different ways to display the magnified area. You can customize this directly below the toggle switches.

1. Click the drop-down menu next to Zoom style.
2. Full Screen: Magnifies the entire display. Your mouse cursor will push the screen around as you move it towards the edges.
3. Split Screen: Divides your screen in half. The bottom half remains normal, while the top half displays a magnified view of wherever your cursor is pointing.
4. Picture-in-Picture: Creates a magnifying glass window that follows your cursor around the screen.

Step 3: Use the Keyboard Shortcuts

Once enabled, you can control the magnification level at any time using system-wide keyboard commands.

1. To instantly zoom in, press Option + Command + Equals (=).
2. Press the shortcut multiple times to increase the magnification level further.
3. To zoom back out, press Option + Command + Minus (-).
4. To quickly toggle the zoom effect on or off without changing the magnification level, press Option + Command + 8.
