How to Extract Specific Pages from a PDF to Create a New File in Preview on macOS

When you are forensically auditing a massive, 500-page PDF document on a macOS workstation and you must mathematically isolate a specific sequence of pages (e.g., pages 45 through 52) to transmit to a third party, extracting them manually via third-party software is inefficient. To force the macOS neural engine to execute a geometric extraction—ripping specific pages out of the monolithic file and compiling them into a brand-new, independent PDF—you must deploy the Thumbnail Drag vector within the native Preview application.

Initializing the Geometric Display

To execute this extraction, you must first expose the internal architecture of the document.

  1. Locate your massive target PDF file in Finder and double-click to open it natively in Preview.
  2. Look at the absolute top-left corner of the Preview window and click the View Menu icon (the small geometric window with a sidebar).
  3. Select Thumbnails from the drop-down matrix.
