How to Enable Dark Mode in Google Keep to Reduce Eye Strain

Google Keep’s default interface is incredibly bright, featuring a stark white background and vibrant, saturated note colors. While this is excellent for readability in direct sunlight, staring at a massive white screen late at night can cause severe eye strain. Furthermore, rendering a perfectly white screen on a modern OLED smartphone physically drains the battery significantly faster. To solve both of these problems simultaneously, you can switch Google Keep from its default Light Theme to a system-wide Dark Mode.

How to Enable Dark Mode on Mobile

On most modern iOS and Android smartphones, Google Keep is designed to automatically obey the global system theme. If you flip your entire iPhone into Dark Mode via the Control Center, Google Keep will instantly follow suit. However, you can manually override the system and force Google Keep to remain dark at all times.

  1. Open the Google Keep app on your mobile device.
  2. Tap the Hamburger menu (the three horizontal lines) in the top-left corner of the screen.
  3. Tap Settings (the gear icon).
  4. Scroll down to the “Display Options” section and tap Theme.
  5. Select Dark.

The entire application will instantly invert. The blinding white background will become a deep, muted charcoal grey. All of your bright, neon note colors will automatically dynamically shift into softer, pastel variants to ensure text remains perfectly readable against the new dark background without burning your retinas.

How to Enable Dark Mode on Desktop Web

If you use Google Keep on a massive, ultra-wide desktop monitor, the default white background is essentially a giant flashlight aimed directly at your face. Fortunately, Google allows you to apply Dark Mode directly to the web browser interface.

  1. Navigate to keep.google.com in your desktop web browser.
  2. Look at the top-right corner of the dashboard, directly next to your Google profile picture.
  3. Click the Settings icon (the gear).
  4. From the drop-down menu, simply click Enable Dark theme.

The web interface will instantly refresh, adopting the identical charcoal grey aesthetic found on the mobile app. To revert back to the bright white theme at any time, click the gear icon again and select “Disable Dark theme.”
