When you are compiling research notes or creating a reading list in Google Keep, you will inevitably need to store website URLs. Unlike robust word processors such as Google Docs or Microsoft Word, Google Keep does not have a dedicated “Insert Hyperlink” button or a formatting toolbar. You cannot highlight a word like “Click Here” and magically hide a URL behind it. However, Google Keep has an incredibly smart, auto-detecting plain text engine that makes storing web addresses effortless.
How to Insert a Clickable Link
Because Google Keep does not support rich-text hyperlinking (hiding a URL behind display text), you must paste the raw, unformatted URL directly into the body of the note.
- Open your web browser and navigate to the website you want to save.
- Click once inside the browser’s address bar to highlight the entire URL (e.g.,
https://www.wikipedia.org). - Press Ctrl + C (or Command + C on a Mac) to copy the address to your clipboard.
- Open Google Keep and create a new note (or open an existing one).
- Click into the main body of the note and press Ctrl + V (Command + V) to paste the raw URL.
As soon as you paste the text, Google Keep’s backend engine will instantly scan the characters. If it detects a valid web protocol (like http:// or https://) or a standard domain structure (like www.), it will automatically convert that plain text string into a blue, clickable hyperlink.
Using the Link Preview Feature
When you paste a URL into a Google Keep note on the web interface, the application often performs a background fetch. It silently visits the website you just pasted, scrapes the site’s meta tags, and generates a rich “Link Preview” box at the very bottom of your note.
This preview box usually contains the website’s logo, the official article title, and a brief snippet of the page’s description. This feature is incredibly useful because it allows you to visually identify what the link is without having to click it. If you paste three different URLs into the same note, Keep will stack three separate rich preview boxes at the bottom, creating a beautiful, organized bibliography.
If you find the preview box annoying or if it is taking up too much space on your dashboard, you can simply hover your mouse over the preview box and click the small X icon in the top right corner to permanently delete the preview snippet (the raw blue URL will remain safely in the text above).
