How to Pause Your YouTube Watch History Tracking

YouTube’s powerful recommendation algorithm relies entirely on your watch history to suggest new content on your homepage. Every single video you click on, even if you only watch it for five seconds, influences the algorithm. If you frequently use your account to play background music at a party, let your children watch cartoons on your iPad, or research a niche topic for a one-off project, your homepage recommendations will instantly become polluted with irrelevant content. To prevent this, you can proactively pause your watch history tracking before you start watching.

How to Pause Your Watch History Tracking

When you pause your history, YouTube completely stops logging the videos you watch. These videos will not appear in your “History” tab, they will not influence your future recommendations, and they cannot be seen by anyone else sharing your account.

  1. Open your web browser and navigate to youtube.com. Make sure you are logged into your Google account.
  2. Look at the left-hand navigation pane. (If you do not see it, click the three horizontal lines in the top-left corner to expand the menu).
  3. Click on History (it usually has a small icon of a clock with a counterclockwise arrow).
  4. You are now looking at a chronological list of every video you have watched. Look at the right-hand side of the screen for a panel titled “Manage all history”.
  5. Underneath the search bar in that panel, click on the button labeled Pause watch history.
  6. A pop-up warning will appear, advising you that pausing your history will make your future recommendations less accurate. Click the blue Pause button to confirm.

A black banner will briefly appear at the bottom of the screen confirming the change. You can now watch as many cartoons or niche documentaries as you want without ruining your algorithm.

How to Turn Tracking Back On

Once you are finished with your temporary viewing session, you must manually turn the tracking back on, or YouTube will never learn your new preferences.

  1. Navigate back to the History tab using the left-hand menu.
  2. Look at the right-hand panel again. The button will have changed.
  3. Click on the button labeled Turn on watch history.
  4. A confirmation pop-up will appear. Click the blue Turn on button.

Your history tracking is immediately reinstated, and any new videos you click on will be permanently logged to your account profile.
