How to Change the Screen Auto-Lock Timeout on an iPad

When you stop using your Apple iPad and set it down on a table, the screen remains illuminated for a short period before automatically turning off and locking the device. This feature, known as Auto-Lock, is crucial for preserving your battery life and securing your personal data. However, the default two-minute timer can be incredibly frustrating if you are trying to read a long recipe while cooking or studying a complex diagram, as the screen will constantly go black right when you need it. Fortunately, you can easily customize how long the screen stays awake.

How to Change the Auto-Lock Timer

You can adjust the display timeout settings directly from the main Settings app on your iPad.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPad’s Home Screen.
  2. Scroll down the left-hand sidebar menu and tap on Display & Brightness.
  3. On the right side of the screen, scroll down until you find the option labeled Auto-Lock. Tap on it.
  4. You will see a list of time intervals, ranging from 2 Minutes up to 15 Minutes, as well as an option for Never.
  5. Tap the specific time interval that best fits your workflow. A blue checkmark will appear next to your selection.

Your changes are saved instantly. You can now press the Home button (or swipe up) to return to your apps, and your screen will stay illuminated for the newly specified duration.

Understanding the “Never” Option

If you select Never from the Auto-Lock menu, your iPad screen will literally stay turned on until the battery completely dies, unless you manually press the physical Power/Sleep button on the edge of the device.

While this is perfect for using the iPad as a permanent digital photo frame, a dedicated smart home control panel, or a teleprompter, it is highly dangerous for everyday use. If you leave the iPad sitting on a desk with the “Never” setting enabled, anyone walking by can pick it up and access all your emails, photos, and apps because the device will never lock itself. Additionally, leaving the screen on maximum brightness for hours on end will drastically degrade your battery health. Use the “Never” option with extreme caution.
