How to Change Folder Colors in Google Drive to Visually Organize Files

If you use Google Drive for work or school, your main directory can quickly become a chaotic mess of nested folders. By default, every single folder you create in Google Drive is given the exact same dull, dark gray icon. When you are staring at a grid of thirty identical gray folders, finding the specific “Q3 Financial Reports” folder requires you to read every single title. To dramatically speed up your workflow and make your digital workspace visually appealing, you should color-code your most important folders.

How to Change a Folder’s Color

Color coding is a purely visual change that only affects the folder icon. It does not alter the folder’s name, its contents, or its sharing permissions.

  1. Open your web browser, navigate to Google Drive, and log into your account.
  2. Locate the specific folder you want to customize.
  3. Right-click directly on the folder icon.
  4. In the context menu that appears, hover your mouse over the Organize option.
  5. A secondary menu will slide out to the side. At the bottom of this menu, you will see a grid of 24 distinct color swatches (ranging from “Tomato” red to “Rain Frog” green).
  6. Click on the color of your choice.

The folder icon will instantly change from the default gray to your selected color.

Creating a Visual System

While you can assign colors at random just to make your Drive look pretty, color coding is most powerful when you establish a strict visual system. For example:

  • Red: Urgent, high-priority projects or highly confidential HR documents.
  • Green: Completed projects, finalized assets, or approved financial budgets.
  • Blue: General administrative folders, templates, and reference materials.
  • Yellow: Active, work-in-progress projects that require your daily attention.

By establishing a color hierarchy, your brain will subconsciously recognize the status and importance of a folder before you even read its title, saving you valuable seconds every time you open Google Drive.

Important Notes on Sharing

It is important to understand that folder colors in Google Drive are completely personal. If you change a shared “Marketing” folder to bright purple on your account, your colleagues will not see that change. When they open their own Google Drive, that same folder will still appear as the default gray (unless they manually choose to color-code it themselves). This ensures that your personal visual organization system does not disrupt your teammates’ workflows.
