By default, whenever you open a new document in Google Sheets, the entire screen is covered by a massive grid of faint gray lines. These gridlines are essential for data entry, as they help your eyes track across rows and columns to ensure you type numbers into the correct cells. However, if you are building an interactive dashboard, a clean project tracker, or a financial summary that is meant to be presented to clients, the default gridlines can make the document look messy, technical, and unfinished. For a much cleaner, professional appearance, you should hide the gridlines to create a blank white canvas.
How to Hide Gridlines in Google Sheets
Hiding gridlines is a cosmetic change that affects the entire current worksheet. It does not delete any data or alter how your formulas work; it simply makes the borders invisible.
- Open your document in Google Sheets.
- Look at the top menu bar (above the formatting ribbon) and click on View.
- In the dropdown menu, hover your mouse over Show.
- A secondary menu will pop out. You will see a checkmark next to the word Gridlines. Click on Gridlines to toggle the checkmark off.
The faint gray lines will instantly vanish, leaving your text and data floating on a clean, solid background.
Re-applying Borders to Specific Cells
Once you hide the global gridlines, your spreadsheet might look a little too empty, making it difficult to read complex tables. The best practice is to hide the global gridlines using the View menu, and then manually apply bold, clean borders only to the specific data tables that actually need them.
- Highlight the specific range of cells that contain your data table.
- Click on the Borders icon in the top formatting ribbon (it looks like a square divided into four smaller squares).
- Select the All Borders option (the first icon in the grid).
- (Optional) While the Borders menu is open, you can click the Border color icon (the pencil) to change the lines from standard black to a softer corporate blue or gray, and the Border style icon to make the lines thicker.
