How to Insert an Animated GIF in Microsoft PowerPoint

Static images and bullet points are the standard for most presentations, but adding subtle motion can significantly increase audience engagement. While Microsoft PowerPoint has a built-in animation engine for text and shapes, setting up complex frame-by-frame animations manually is time-consuming. Instead, you can simply insert an Animated GIF. An Animated GIF acts exactly like a standard picture in PowerPoint, but when you enter Slide Show mode, it will automatically play its looping animation without requiring any extra setup.

How to Insert an Animated GIF

Because PowerPoint treats GIFs identically to JPEGs or PNGs, the insertion process is exactly the same as adding a normal photo.

1. Download or save your desired Animated GIF file to your computer (e.g., in your Downloads or Pictures folder).
2. Open your PowerPoint presentation and navigate to the slide where you want the animation to appear.
3. Click on the Insert tab located on the top ribbon menu.
4. Click on Pictures, and then select This Device from the dropdown menu.
5. A file explorer window will open. Navigate to the folder where you saved the GIF, click on the file to select it, and click the Insert button.

The GIF will appear on your slide. You can now click and drag it to reposition it, or drag the corner handles to resize it, just like a standard image.

Previewing the Animation

If you are using an older version of PowerPoint, you might notice that the GIF is completely frozen on the slide. Do not panic. In the standard editing view (Normal View), PowerPoint often pauses GIFs to conserve system resources and prevent distractions while you are writing text.

To verify that the GIF actually works, you must preview the presentation:

1. Look at the bottom right corner of the PowerPoint window.
2. Click the Slide Show button (it looks like a projector screen on a stand). Alternatively, press Shift + F5 on your keyboard to start the presentation from the current slide.

As soon as the slide fills the screen, the GIF will begin playing and looping continuously. If you want the GIF to play only once and then stop, you cannot do that within PowerPoint; you must edit the GIF file itself using an external image editor before inserting it into your slide.
