How to Add a Decorative Page Border to a Google Doc

If you are designing a certificate of achievement, an event flyer, or a formal title page in Google Docs, adding a decorative border around the edge of the page instantly elevates the professional look of the document. Unlike Microsoft Word, which has a dedicated “Page Borders” button built directly into its main ribbon, Google Docs lacks a native page border feature. However, you can achieve the exact same effect by using a clever workaround involving a single-cell table.

Creating the Border Using a Table

Because Google Docs allows you to heavily customize the borders of table cells, we can insert a table that consists of only one giant cell and stretch it to fill the entire page.

  1. Open your Google Doc. Ensure your margins are set to your preference (usually 1 inch on all sides).
  2. Click the Insert menu at the top of the screen.
  3. Hover over Table and select a 1×1 grid (a single square).
  4. A small rectangular box will appear in your document.
  5. Press the Enter (Return) key on your keyboard repeatedly while your cursor is inside that box. Keep pressing it until the bottom of the box stretches all the way down to the bottom margin of your page. Do not push it onto the second page.

Styling the Border

Now that the structural frame is in place, you can format it to look like a proper decorative border rather than a spreadsheet cell.

  1. Click anywhere inside the giant table cell you just created.
  2. Look at the top toolbar (on the far right side) for the table formatting options. You will see three specific icons:
    • Background color: (A paint bucket icon) Leave this white, unless you want the entire page to be a solid color.
    • Border color: (A pen icon) Click this to change the color of the border from the default black to a professional navy blue or an elegant gold.
    • Border width: (An icon with varying line thicknesses) Click this and change it from 1pt to 3pt or 4.5pt to make the border thick and visible.
    • Border dash: (An icon with a dotted line) If you want a decorative dashed or dotted border instead of a solid line, select your preferred style here.

Adding Text Inside the Border

The beauty of this method is that your text will naturally remain inside the border. Simply click inside the top of the giant cell and begin typing your title page or certificate details. You can highlight the text and center it, change the font size, and add images inside the box just as you would on a normal page.

Pro Tip: Adjusting the Padding. If your text looks too cramped and is touching the colored border line, you can increase the internal padding. Right-click inside the cell, select Table properties, open the Cell accordion menu on the right sidebar, and increase the “Cell padding” from 0.069 inches to 0.25 inches.
