When you are working remotely on your MacBook and notice your battery draining much faster than usual, it can be frustrating trying to identify the culprit. While macOS does an excellent job of managing background tasks, certain poorly optimised web browsers, Electron-based chat applications, or rendering software can silently consume massive amounts of CPU cycles, generating heat and drastically reducing your battery runtime. Apple provides a built-in diagnostic tool called Activity Monitor, which includes a dedicated “Energy” tab designed specifically to help you hunt down and terminate these battery-draining processes.
Launching the Activity Monitor
Activity Monitor is the macOS equivalent of the Windows Task Manager. It is located in the Utilities folder, but the fastest way to access it is via Spotlight.
- Press Command + Spacebar to open the Spotlight search bar.
- Type Activity Monitor and press Enter.
- When the application opens, click on the Energy tab located at the top-center of the window.
Understanding the Energy Tab Metrics
Unlike the CPU or Memory tabs which display raw percentages or megabytes, the Energy tab uses an Apple-designed metric called “Energy Impact.” This is a composite score calculated by the operating system that takes into account CPU usage, disk wakeups, network activity, and whether the app is forcing the dedicated graphics card to remain active.
You will see several columns:
- Energy Impact: The current real-time energy score of the application. A score under 10 is excellent. A score above 100 indicates heavy battery drain.
- 12 hr Power: The average energy impact of the application over the last 12 hours. This is crucial for identifying apps that drain your battery slowly over a long workday, even if they aren’t spiking right this second.
- App Nap: Indicates whether the application is currently suspended by macOS to save power (Yes or No).
- Preventing Sleep: A critical column that shows “Yes” if an app is actively blocking your MacBook from entering sleep mode when you close the lid or walk away.
Identifying and Terminating High-Impact Apps
To find the worst offenders, you should sort the list.
- Click the Energy Impact column header to sort the list in descending order (highest numbers at the top).
- Review the top three or four applications. If you are rendering a 4K video in Final Cut Pro, a high score is expected and normal. However, if a background helper tool for a cloud syncing service or an idle web browser tab is displaying an Energy Impact of 300, it has likely stalled or encountered a bug.
- To stop a problematic application, click on its name in the list once to highlight it.
- Click the Stop button (the octagon with an X inside it) located at the very top of the Activity Monitor window.
- A confirmation dialog will appear. Click Quit to ask the app to close gracefully, or Force Quit to terminate it instantly if it is unresponsive.
Monitoring the Bottom Pane Statistics
At the bottom of the Activity Monitor window, you will find aggregate statistics for your entire MacBook. The “Energy Impact” graph shows a historical line chart of your total system power draw. More importantly, the “Time on battery” metric tells you exactly how long your Mac has been unplugged, while “Remaining charge” gives you the current battery percentage. Checking this pane periodically can help you gauge whether your recent force-quits have successfully stabilised your battery drain.
