If you share a Mac with family members or roommates, you might not want them to see the websites you have been visiting. While you can manually clear your history or constantly use Private Browsing mode, it is easy to forget. Instead, you can configure Apple Safari to automatically wipe your browsing history, cookies, and search data the moment you quit the application, ensuring a clean slate every time you open the browser.
How to Configure Auto-Clear in Safari
This setting is built directly into the Safari preferences menu, though it is slightly hidden among the general options.
- Open the Safari browser on your Mac.
- In the top menu bar, click on the bold Safari name (next to the Apple logo).
- Select Settings… (or Preferences on older versions of macOS) from the dropdown menu.
- Ensure you are on the General tab (the icon looks like a light switch).
- Look for the dropdown menu labelled Remove history items:. By default, this is usually set to “After one year” or “Manually.”
- Click the dropdown menu and select After one day.
- Now, look slightly further down for the dropdown menu labelled Remove downloaded list items:.
- Change this to Upon successful download.
How Safari Handles the Daily Wipe
Because Safari does not offer a specific “Clear on Exit” option in the standard GUI, setting the history to clear “After one day” is the closest automated solution Apple provides. Safari will automatically purge any browsing data that is older than 24 hours.
If you need absolute, instant clearance the moment you close a window, you must rely on Private Browsing. You can force Safari to always open in this mode:
- In that same General settings tab, locate the Safari opens with: option.
- Click the dropdown menu and select A new private window.
With this enabled, Safari will never save your history in the first place, completely removing the need for a daily automated wipe.
