Microsoft Edge includes a powerful memory management feature known as Sleeping Tabs. When active, this feature automatically suspends background tabs that you are not actively using, releasing valuable RAM and reducing CPU usage. This is particularly beneficial for users who keep dozens of tabs open simultaneously, as it prevents the browser from draining system resources and battery life.

How Microsoft Edge Sleeping Tabs Work

Unlike traditional tab suspension extensions, the Sleeping Tabs feature is built directly into the core engine of Microsoft Edge. When a tab enters the sleep state, the browser pauses any active scripts, animations, and media playback. The tab remains visible in your tab bar, but its resource footprint is drastically reduced. Clicking the sleeping tab instantly wakes it up, reloading the page exactly where you left off.

How to Enable and Configure Sleeping Tabs

To take full control of your browser’s memory usage, you can customise exactly when tabs go to sleep.

1. Open Microsoft Edge and click the three-dot menu icon in the top-right corner.
2. Select Settings from the dropdown menu.
3. In the left-hand sidebar, click on System and performance.
4. Scroll down to the Optimise Performance section.
5. Toggle the switch next to Save resources with sleeping tabs to the On position.
6. Use the dropdown menu next to Put inactive tabs to sleep after the specified amount of time to choose your preferred delay. Options range from 5 minutes of inactivity up to 12 hours.

How to Exclude Specific Websites from Sleeping

Certain web applications, such as real-time dashboards, messaging platforms, or active email clients, should never be suspended. You can add these URLs to an exclusion list.

1. Return to the System and performance settings page in Microsoft Edge.
2. Locate the section titled Never put these sites to sleep.
3. Click the Add button.
4. Enter the complete URL of the website you want to keep active (for example, mail.google.com) and click Add.

Edge will immediately apply this rule, ensuring that any matching tab remains fully active in the background, regardless of your inactivity timer.
