How to Automatically Clear the Bash Command History on Logout in Linux

Every time you type a command into a Linux terminal, the operating system quietly saves that command into a hidden text file located in your home directory (~/.bash_history). This is incredibly convenient; it allows you to press the “Up” arrow key to repeat a long, complex command you typed yesterday.

However, on a shared server, a jump-box, or a highly secure production machine, this history file is a massive security vulnerability. If you accidentally type a database password directly into the command line (e.g., mysql -u root -pMySecretPassword), that password is now saved in plain text inside your history file. Anyone who logs into the server after you can simply type history and read your credentials.

To enforce strict operational security, you can configure the Bash shell to act like an “Incognito Mode” window, automatically wiping its memory completely clean the exact second you log out or close the SSH connection.

Step 1: Open the Bash Logout Script

When you initiate a logout sequence (by typing exit or closing PuTTY), the Bash shell looks for a specific hidden file called .bash_logout to execute any final cleanup commands before it dies.

  1. Log into your Linux server.
  2. Open the logout script in a text editor (make sure you are in your home directory):
    nano ~/.bash_logout
  3. If the file does not exist, nano will simply create it for you.

Step 2: Inject the History Kill Commands

You need to issue two distinct commands to fully eradicate the history.

  1. Paste the following two lines into the file:
    history -c
    history -w

Understanding the Kill Sequence

  • history -c: The “c” stands for clear. This instantly wipes the active, live history out of the server’s RAM. However, if you only run this, the old history from previous days might still exist on the hard drive.
  • history -w: The “w” stands for write. This commands Bash to take the current state of the RAM (which you just wiped clean in the previous step) and forcefully overwrite the physical .bash_history file on the hard drive. This guarantees the file on the disk is left completely blank.

Step 3: Save and Test

  1. Press Ctrl+O then Enter to save the file.
  2. Press Ctrl+X to exit the nano editor.

To verify the security protocol is working, type a random, highly visible command (e.g., echo "THIS IS A SECRET TEST"). Then, type exit to log out of the server.

Log back into the server and type history. You will see that the list is completely empty (except for the history command you just typed). Your session has been perfectly scrubbed, ensuring zero credential leakage on shared infrastructure.
