How to Completely Disable the ‘Shake to Find’ Mouse Pointer Feature on a Mac

If you have ever used a Mac, you have likely experienced this bizarre phenomenon: you are reading an article, you absentmindedly wiggle your physical mouse back and forth, and suddenly the black mouse pointer on your screen grows to the size of a tennis ball.

This is not a bug or a graphical glitch. Apple intentionally built a feature called “Shake to locate” into macOS. The idea is that if you have a massive dual-monitor setup and lose track of where your tiny cursor is, you can just violently wiggle your mouse and the operating system will temporarily magnify the cursor so you can spot it.

While helpful for some, it can be incredibly distracting for power users, graphic designers, or gamers who make rapid, twitchy mouse movements and suddenly have half their screen obscured by a giant black arrow. Fortunately, you can completely lobotomize this behavior.

Step 1: Open System Settings

  1. Click the Apple logo in the top left corner of your screen.
  2. Select System Settings (or “System Preferences” if you are running an older version of macOS like Monterey or Big Sur).

Step 2: Navigate to Accessibility

Unlike standard mouse tracking speed or scrolling direction, the giant cursor feature is actually buried inside the accessibility tools.

  1. In the left-hand sidebar, scroll down and click on Accessibility.
  2. In the right-hand pane, look under the “Vision” section and click on Display.

Step 3: Disable the Shake Feature

  1. Look at the top of the Display menu for the section specifically dedicated to the “Pointer.”
  2. You will see a master toggle switch labeled: Shake mouse pointer to locate.
  3. Click the toggle switch to turn it Off (the switch will turn from green to gray).

Step 4: Alternative Options (Permanent Magnification)

The moment you disable that switch, you can shake your physical mouse as violently as you want and the cursor will remain perfectly static at its default size.

However, if your actual problem was that you are visually impaired and you legitimately could not see the cursor, turning off the shake feature might make your Mac harder to use. Instead of relying on the shake gimmick, you can just permanently make the cursor larger.

  1. In that exact same Accessibility > Display menu, look directly below the toggle switch you just disabled.
  2. You will see a slider labeled Pointer size.
  3. Drag the slider to the right. The cursor will permanently enlarge, making it much easier to read without having to constantly jiggle your mouse to trigger the animation.
  4. You can also click on Pointer outline color and Pointer fill color to change the arrow from black and white to neon pink or bright green, ensuring you never lose it on a white webpage again.
