What is Presence Sensing?
In modern computing environments, leaving your PC unlocked when you step away from your desk poses a significant security risk. While Windows has long offered timeout-based screen locks (e.g., locking after 10 minutes of inactivity), this approach is flawed: it leaves a window of vulnerability before locking, and it often locks prematurely while you are reading a long document without moving the mouse.
Presence Sensing is a modern Windows 11 feature that utilizes specialized hardware (typically a laptop webcam equipped with infrared or proximity sensors) to detect whether a human is physically sitting in front of the screen. When you walk away, Windows instantly dims and locks the screen. When you return, it wakes the screen back up.
Hardware Requirements
Presence Sensing is a hardware-dependent feature. It requires a PC equipped with a supported proximity sensor. This is most commonly found in premium business laptops (like the Lenovo ThinkPad line or Dell Latitudes) and select modern webcams. If your PC does not have the required hardware, the settings will not appear in Windows 11.
How to Enable Presence Sensing
To configure the feature, follow these steps:
- Click the Start button and open the Settings app (or press
Windows + I). - In the left sidebar, click on System.
- Select Power & battery from the main menu.
- Scroll down to the “Power” section and click on Presence sensing to expand its options.
Note: If you do not see the Presence sensing menu here, your hardware does not support the feature.
Configuring Wake and Lock Behaviors
Once you expand the Presence sensing menu, you can toggle two primary features:
1. Wake on Approach
Toggle on “Wake my device when I approach.” When enabled, the proximity sensor will constantly scan the area in front of the PC. As soon as you sit down, the screen will wake up. If you have Windows Hello facial recognition enabled, this creates a seamless, zero-touch login experience. You sit down, the screen wakes, the camera reads your face, and the PC unlocks automatically.
2. Lock on Leave
Toggle on “Lock my device when I leave.” This is the crucial security feature. You can customize its behavior using the drop-down menus beneath it:
- Distance: Set how far away you need to walk before the sensor registers that you have left.
- Timeout: Choose how quickly the screen should lock after you leave (e.g., immediately, after 10 seconds, or after 1 minute).
- External Display Behavior: Choose whether the PC should lock if you leave while it is connected to an external monitor.
Privacy Considerations
Because Presence Sensing uses optical or infrared sensors to detect humans, privacy is a common concern. Microsoft designed the feature to process all presence data locally on the device’s neural processing unit (NPU) or local processor. No images, video, or presence metadata are sent to Microsoft servers.
Furthermore, you can control which specific third-party applications have access to the presence sensor. To manage this:
- Go to Settings > Privacy & security.
- Scroll down to the “App permissions” section.
- Click on Presence sensing.
- Here, you can toggle access on or off for the entire system, or revoke access for individual applications to ensure no background software is monitoring your proximity.
