How to Use the Wireless Diagnostics Tool on macOS to Fix Wi-Fi Drops

The Hidden Wi-Fi Troubleshooting Tool

Intermittent Wi-Fi drops, high latency, and weak signal strength are some of the most frustrating issues a Mac user can experience. While the standard macOS Wi-Fi menu provides basic information, it lacks the diagnostic depth needed to pinpoint complex network interference or hardware faults.

Fortunately, Apple includes a powerful, hidden utility in macOS called Wireless Diagnostics. This tool can analyze your current connection, monitor for intermittent drops over time, and provide actionable recommendations to improve your network stability.

How to Open Wireless Diagnostics

Because it is a developer-level tool, Wireless Diagnostics is not found in your standard Applications folder.

  1. Hold down the Option (⌥) key on your Mac keyboard.
  2. While holding Option, click the Wi-Fi icon in the top-right Menu Bar.
  3. You will notice a wealth of hidden technical data (such as your IP address, Router address, Security type, BSSID, Channel, and RSSI).
  4. Click on Open Wireless Diagnostics… from the drop-down menu.

How to Run a Standard Diagnostic Test

When the Wireless Diagnostics window opens, it will present a brief introduction.

  1. Click Continue to begin the test.
  2. You may be prompted to enter your macOS administrator password.
  3. The tool will analyze your network environment. This process takes a few minutes.
  4. Once complete, it will present a summary of its findings. If it detects obvious issues (such as conflicting IP addresses, a crowded Wi-Fi channel, or poor router placement), it will list them under “Review Summary.”
  5. Click on the blue information icon (i) next to any summary item for detailed advice on how to fix the problem.

How to Monitor for Intermittent Drops

A standard test is only useful if your network is currently failing. If your Wi-Fi drops randomly every few hours, you need the tool to monitor the connection in the background.

  1. Open Wireless Diagnostics (Option + Click Wi-Fi icon).
  2. In the first window, instead of clicking Continue, select Monitor my Wi-Fi connection.
  3. Click Continue.

The window will minimize, and the tool will run silently in the background. Leave it running while you work. If your Mac loses its connection to the router, the tool will instantly trigger, capture a diagnostic snapshot of the exact moment the failure occurred, and generate a comprehensive log file for analysis.

How to Use the Hidden Sniffer and Scan Tools

Wireless Diagnostics also contains several standalone utilities hidden within its menu bar.

While the Wireless Diagnostics app is open and active on your screen, look at the top macOS Menu Bar and click on Window. You will see several advanced tools:

  • Scan: This tool acts as a Wi-Fi scanner. It lists every wireless network in your vicinity, showing their exact BSSID, protocol, and noise levels. Crucially, the sidebar recommends the “Best 2.4 GHz” and “Best 5 GHz” channels for your environment. If your router is on a crowded channel, log into your router’s admin panel and change it to the recommended channel.
  • Performance: This opens a live, scrolling graph displaying your Tx Rate (transmit speed), Signal quality, and Noise levels. It is incredibly useful for testing router placement. Walk around your house with your MacBook while watching the graph to find wireless dead zones.
  • Sniffer: This allows network administrators to capture raw 802.11 wireless packets in the air for analysis in tools like Wireshark.
