How to Disable the Windows 11 SmartScreen Filter for App Installations

Windows 11 includes a robust security component known as Microsoft Defender SmartScreen. This background service acts as a gatekeeper, analyzing every single executable (.exe or .msi) file you download from the internet. If you attempt to install a niche, open-source utility that Microsoft’s servers have never seen before, SmartScreen will throw a massive, intimidating blue warning across your entire monitor stating: “Windows protected your PC.”

While you can usually bypass this warning by clicking “More info” and then “Run anyway,” this extra step becomes incredibly tedious for developers, IT professionals, and power users who frequently install custom or obscure software.

How to Disable the SmartScreen Filter

Warning: Disabling this feature removes a critical layer of defense against malware. Only proceed if you exclusively download software from trusted, verified sources and know exactly what you are installing.

  1. Click the Windows Start menu, type Windows Security, and press Enter to open the native antivirus dashboard.
  2. In the left-hand navigation pane, click on App & browser control.
  3. In the main window, locate the “Reputation-based protection” section and click the blue Reputation-based protection settings link.
  4. You will see several different SmartScreen toggles. Look for the very first toggle labeled Check apps and files (the description notes it protects your device by checking for unrecognized apps).
  5. Toggle this switch to the Off position.
  6. A User Account Control (UAC) prompt will appear asking for administrative permission. Click Yes.

Handling the Warning Notifications

The moment you disable SmartScreen, the Windows Security dashboard will display a yellow warning icon, and you will likely receive a notification urging you to turn the protection back on.

To silence these persistent warnings, you can tell Windows that you are intentionally ignoring the security risk.

  1. Return to the main App & browser control page within the Windows Security app.
  2. You will see the yellow warning triangle next to the SmartScreen section. Directly beneath the warning text, click the small link that says Dismiss.

The warning triangle will disappear, returning the dashboard to a healthy green checkmark. From this point forward, Windows 11 will allow you to double-click and install any executable file instantly, without ever interrupting your workflow with a blue SmartScreen warning.
