How to Turn On the iPhone Reachability Feature for One-Handed Use

As modern iPhones have grown larger, reaching the top-left corner of the screen with your thumb to tap a “Back” button has become nearly impossible for most users holding the device with one hand. To solve this ergonomic problem, Apple built a clever accessibility feature called Reachability directly into iOS.

When triggered, Reachability physically slides the entire user interface down to the bottom half of your screen, placing every top-level navigation button perfectly within reach of your thumb.

How to Enable Reachability

Reachability is occasionally turned off by default, especially if you restored your iPhone from an older backup.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Accessibility.
  3. Under the “Physical and Motor” section, tap on Touch.
  4. Locate the toggle switch labeled Reachability at the top of the screen.
  5. Toggle the switch to the On position (it will turn green).

How to Use the Gesture

The method for triggering this feature depends entirely on whether your iPhone has a physical Home button or uses Face ID.

For iPhones without a Home Button (Face ID models):
Look at the very bottom edge of your screen where the horizontal navigation bar sits (the thin line you swipe up on to go home). Swipe down directly on that thin bar. The entire app interface will instantly slide down the screen, leaving the top half completely blank.

For iPhones with a Home Button (Touch ID models):
Gently double-tap the physical Home button. Do not physically click the button inward; simply rest your finger on the sensor and tap it twice in rapid succession like a laptop trackpad.

How to Return the Screen to Normal

Once the screen is lowered, you can easily tap whatever button was previously out of reach. After you interact with the app, the screen will automatically snap back to its normal, full-screen position after a few seconds.

If you want to manually return the screen to full size immediately, simply swipe up from the middle of the screen, or tap anywhere in the blank space at the top.
