How to Change the Vehicle Icon in Google Maps Navigation

When using Google Maps for turn-by-turn navigation on your smartphone, your current location and heading are represented by a standard blue arrow. If you find the blue arrow boring, Google Maps includes a fun, hidden easter egg that allows you to change your navigation cursor into a 3D animated vehicle.

How to Change Your Navigation Icon

This feature is available on both the iOS and Android versions of the Google Maps app. However, it only works when you are actively navigating in “Driving” mode (it will not work for walking, cycling, or public transit directions).

  1. Open the Google Maps app on your phone.
  2. Enter a destination in the search bar and tap Directions.
  3. Ensure the transportation mode is set to Driving (the car icon) and tap the Start button to begin live navigation.
  4. Once the map enters the 3D turn-by-turn perspective, tap directly on the blue navigation arrow in the center of the screen.
  5. A small menu will slide up from the bottom of the screen displaying different vehicle options.

Available Vehicle Options

As of right now, Google offers three permanent vehicle replacements for the standard blue arrow:

  • A red sedan car.
  • A yellow pickup truck.
  • A green SUV.

Tap on the vehicle you want to use. The menu will disappear, and your blue arrow will instantly transform into a 3D model of that vehicle. As you drive, the vehicle will animate, turning its wheels and following your exact path.

Your choice is saved globally across your Google account. The next time you start a driving route, your chosen vehicle will remain active until you tap on it again and switch it back to the classic blue arrow.
