Staring at a bright white screen while working in Google Docs late at night can cause significant eye strain. While Google Docs on the web doesn’t have a native one-click dark mode button in its toolbar, the mobile apps for Android and iOS offer a fully supported Dark Theme that makes late-night editing much more comfortable.
How to Enable Dark Theme on Android and iPhone
The Google Docs mobile application allows you to override your device’s system-wide theme and force the app into a dark mode, or you can have it automatically match your phone’s current settings.
- Open the Google Docs app on your smartphone or tablet.
- Tap the three horizontal lines (hamburger menu) in the top-left corner of the screen.
- Select Settings from the slide-out menu.
- Tap on Theme (or “Choose theme” on iOS).
- Select Dark.
The entire interface, including the document canvas itself, will instantly switch to a dark gray and black color palette, drastically reducing glare.
How to Preview in Light Theme
Sometimes you need to see how a document will look when printed or viewed on a normal screen, but you don’t want to disable Dark Theme entirely. Google Docs has a shortcut for this.
- Open a document while Dark Theme is active.
- Tap the three vertical dots in the top-right corner.
- Toggle on the switch labeled View in light theme.
This temporarily changes the document background to white while leaving the rest of the app’s menus in dark mode, giving you the best of both worlds.
