How to Change the Mouse Scroll Speed in Windows 11

Whether you are rapidly scrolling through long PDF documents or carefully reading a website, your mouse’s scroll wheel dictates the pace. By default, Windows 11 is configured to scroll exactly three lines of text per “click” (or notch) of your mouse wheel. For some users, this feels sluggish, while others find it far too jarring and fast.

Fortunately, Windows 11 allows you to customize the scroll speed to perfectly match your personal reading habits and hardware.

How to Adjust Mouse Wheel Scroll Speed

  1. Click the Start button and open the Settings app (or press Windows Key + I).
  2. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Bluetooth & devices.
  3. Scroll down the list of connected hardware and click on Mouse.
  4. Look for the setting labelled Lines to scroll at a time.
  5. Click and drag the slider left or right. The default is 3. Dragging it to the right (e.g., 6 or 7) will make scrolling much faster, while dragging it to the left (e.g., 1 or 2) will provide a slower, smoother experience.

The changes take effect immediately; you do not need to click a save button. Open a long webpage or document right now and test the wheel. If it still doesn’t feel right, simply adjust the slider again until you hit the sweet spot.

Scrolling an Entire Screen

If you regularly digest massive spreadsheets or thousands of lines of code, scrolling a few lines at a time might still be too slow. Windows offers a dramatic alternative.

Just above the speed slider in the Mouse settings, you will see a dropdown menu labelled Roll the mouse wheel to scroll. By default, it is set to “Multiple lines at a time.” Click the dropdown and change it to One screen at a time.

Now, a single notch of your mouse wheel acts exactly like pressing the “Page Down” key on your keyboard, instantly jumping you to the next block of text.
