The Apple App Store is generally highly reliable, but occasionally it can suffer from frustrating glitches. You might tap “Update” on an app and it simply spins indefinitely, a download might stall halfway through, or the “Updates” page might appear entirely blank even though you know new versions are available.
These issues are almost always caused by a corrupted cache. The App Store saves temporary data to load pages faster, but if that data becomes jumbled, the store loses its ability to communicate properly with Apple’s servers. Fortunately, there is a hidden, built-in shortcut to force the App Store to flush this cache and reload fresh data.
How to Clear the App Store Cache
You do not need to navigate through the Settings app to perform this action. The mechanism is built directly into the App Store interface itself.
- Open the App Store application on your iPhone or iPad.
- Look at the navigation bar at the very bottom of the screen. You will see several icons: Today, Games, Apps, Arcade, and Search.
- Choose any one of those icons (for example, the “Today” icon).
- Tap that exact same icon 10 times in rapid succession. (You must tap quickly, without pausing).
What Happens Next?
When you successfully tap the icon 10 times quickly, the App Store screen will suddenly flash white, and the app will appear to briefly freeze or reload.
This flash indicates that the cache clearing command was successfully executed. The App Store has dumped all its temporary files and is forcibly fetching fresh data directly from Apple’s servers.
After the screen reloads, navigate back to the “Updates” page or search for the specific app that was stuck. The stalled download should now resume normally, or the update button should reappear, allowing you to trigger the installation successfully.
Note: This action does not delete any of your installed apps, remove your payment methods, or log you out of your Apple ID. It is a completely safe troubleshooting step that only affects temporary background data.
