Over time, the Google Chrome application on your smartphone accumulates a massive amount of cached images, cookies, and browsing history. While cache data is intended to speed up website loading times, an overgrown cache can actually slow down your browser, cause rendering glitches on frequently visited sites, and consume gigabytes of precious internal storage on your mobile device.
Whether you need to troubleshoot a broken website, free up storage space, or protect your privacy, clearing your browsing data is a necessary maintenance step. This guide explains how to clear your history and cache in the Google Chrome app on both iOS and Android.
How to Clear Browsing Data in Chrome Mobile
The interface for clearing data is virtually identical on both the iPhone and Android versions of the Chrome app.
- Open the Google Chrome app on your smartphone.
- Tap the three-dot menu icon. (On Android, this is usually in the top-right corner; on iPhone, it is typically in the bottom-right corner).
- From the menu, select History.
- Tap the Clear browsing data… button located at the top (or bottom, depending on your OS) of the history list.
- You will be presented with a Time Range dropdown menu. This is a critical step. If you only want to delete recent activity, select Last hour or Last 24 hours. If you want to perform a complete wipe, select All time.
- Check the specific boxes for the data you wish to delete:
- Browsing history: Deletes the list of websites you have visited.
- Cookies and site data: Deletes saved login sessions (you will be logged out of most websites).
- Cached images and files: Deletes the stored assets that speed up page loading. (Select this option to free up storage space).
- Tap the red Clear Data button to confirm.
A Warning Regarding Sync
If you are signed into your Google Account within the Chrome app and have “Sync” enabled, your browsing history is shared across all your devices (including your desktop computer and tablet).
When you delete your browsing history on your mobile phone, that history will also be permanently deleted from your desktop computer. If you only want to free up space on your phone without affecting your desktop, ensure you only check the “Cached images and files” box, and leave the “Browsing history” box unchecked.
