There is nothing more frustrating than leaving your desk for a quick lunch break, only to return and find that Windows 11 has automatically restarted your PC to install a minor security update, forcefully closing all your open applications and unsaved documents in the process.
Microsoft engineered a feature specifically to prevent this exact scenario. It is called Active Hours. By configuring Active Hours, you are explicitly telling Windows 11 when you are typically sitting at the computer working. Windows will strictly respect this window and will never automatically restart your PC during these hours.
In this guide, you will learn how to configure Active Hours in Windows 11 to protect your workflow from sudden update reboots.
Step 1: Open Windows Update Settings
Active Hours is managed directly within the Windows Update engine.
- Click the Start button on your taskbar.
- Select the Settings gear icon (or press Windows Key + I on your keyboard).
- In the left-hand navigation pane, click on Windows Update.
- On the right side of the screen, click on Advanced options.
Step 2: Configure Active Hours
Under the “Advanced options” page, locate the setting labelled Active hours and click it to expand the menu.
You will see a drop-down menu labelled Adjust active hours with two options: Automatically or Manually.
Option A: The Automatic Method
By default, Windows 11 usually sets this to “Automatically.” When this is enabled, the operating system uses machine learning to monitor your keyboard and mouse inputs over several days. It learns that you usually work between 9:00 AM and 6:00 PM, and automatically sets your Active Hours to match. If your schedule changes (e.g., you start working night shifts), Windows will eventually notice and adjust the hours for you.
Option B: The Manual Method (Recommended)
If you do not want to rely on the algorithm, or if you have a highly erratic schedule but absolutely cannot risk a reboot during a specific 12-hour window, you should set this manually.
- Change the drop-down menu to Manually.
- Two new time boxes will appear: Start time and End time.
- Click the Start time and set it to when you usually begin your day (e.g., 08:00 AM). Click the checkmark to save.
- Click the End time and set it to when you are definitively finished working (e.g., 10:00 PM). Click the checkmark to save.
Important Limitation: Windows 11 only allows you to set an Active Hours window of up to 18 hours maximum. You cannot set it to 24 hours to permanently block restarts. The system insists on having at least a 6-hour window where it is permitted to reboot if a critical patch requires it.
What Happens Outside Active Hours?
If a Windows update downloads and requires a restart, the operating system will wait silently in the background until your “End time” passes. Once it is outside your Active Hours, and if the PC is plugged in and idle, it will initiate the restart process automatically.
By properly defining your Active Hours, you take back control of your machine, ensuring that Microsoft’s update schedule never interferes with your critical work hours.
