How to Use the macOS ColorSync Utility to Repair Color Profiles

Graphic designers, photographers, and video editors rely on absolute colour accuracy across their entire workflow. The red hue they see on their MacBook Pro screen must perfectly match the red hue on their external monitor, and eventually, the red ink produced by their professional printer.

macOS manages this complex translation using a framework called ColorSync. ColorSync relies on specific ICC (International Color Consortium) profile files to understand the precise colour capabilities of every display and printer connected to your Mac.

Occasionally, these profile files can become corrupted during a macOS update or when installing new design software, resulting in strange colour tints, muddy blacks, or inaccurate printer outputs. In this guide, you will learn how to use the built-in ColorSync Utility to diagnose and repair these broken profiles.

Step 1: Open the ColorSync Utility

The ColorSync Utility is a powerful, low-level administrative tool buried deep within the macOS Utilities folder.

  1. Press Command + Space to open Spotlight Search.
  2. Type ColorSync Utility.
  3. Press Enter to launch the application.

Step 2: Verify Your Color Profiles

Before making any changes, you should run a diagnostic scan to see if any of your profiles are actually damaged or violating ICC specifications.

  1. When the ColorSync Utility opens, look at the main window. You will see a large toolbar at the very top.
  2. Click the Profile First Aid tab (the icon looks like a stethoscope).
  3. Click the Verify button in the bottom right corner of the window.

The utility will immediately begin scanning the hundreds of default and custom ICC profiles scattered across your system directories (/Library/ColorSync/Profiles and /System/Library/ColorSync/Profiles).

The text box will populate with a detailed log. A healthy system will report “Verify done – no errors found.” If profiles are broken, you will see red error text indicating things like “Tag size is not correct” or “Header message digest is empty.”

Step 3: Repair the Broken Profiles

If the verification scan uncovered errors, you must instruct the utility to fix them.

  1. Click the Repair button, located directly next to the Verify button.
  2. macOS will run through the exact same list of broken profiles. It will attempt to rewrite the headers and fix any structural corruption within the ICC files to bring them back into compliance with the official specifications.
  3. When finished, the log should report that the files were successfully repaired.

Note: You may be prompted to enter your Mac administrator password during this process, as you are modifying core system files.

Step 4: Inspecting Individual Profiles (Optional)

If you are still experiencing colour issues with a specific monitor after running First Aid, you can inspect the active profile manually.

  1. Click the Devices tab in the top toolbar.
  2. Expand the Displays section.
  3. Click on your specific monitor. The right-hand pane will show the “Current Profile” assigned to that display.
  4. If the profile is incorrect (e.g., your LG monitor is using a generic sRGB profile instead of the custom LG profile you downloaded), click the small drop-down arrow next to “Current Profile” and select Other… to manually assign the correct .icc file.

By regularly verifying your ColorSync profiles, you ensure that the colour pipeline between your Mac and your external hardware remains pristine and accurate.
